Grants
One of the principal objectives of Tanzania Culture Trust Fund is to provide grants to cultural projects and activities in Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar.

Mfuko provides three types of grants for cultural activities:

Institutional grants. These are aimed at building institutional capacity for competence and networking on cultural activities. They are intended for institutions engaged in cultural training and networking. Projects in this category should be able to apply knowledge and ideas in strategic areas and focus on strategic target groups.
Production incentive grants. Grants in this category are intended to be used to stimulate production among groups, organisations and companies whose projects fall within the framework of the culture sector and its associated activities. They must be used to generate further productions, introduce new quality products and foster cultural tourism. Moreover, they should increase public access to cultural debates and promote awareness of our cultural identity.
Cultural exchange grants. The main objective of this category is promoting and supporting regional and international cultural cooperation that is geared towards the integration and expansion of the national cultural wealth.

Limitations
All grants from Tanzania Culture Trust Fund must be used for purposes applied for, as contained in the Guidelines & Conditions for Grants Application. It is against the rules to use funds contrary to the agreed intentions.

None of TCTF grants can be used for overhead costs, salaries of permanent staff, purchase of land, construction of houses or buildings.

Comparison of Grants Allocated
Since its inception six years ago, Mfuko has so far provided grants for 302 cultural or associated projects throughout Tanzania in six rounds. The first and second rounds of grants, i.e. for years 1999 and 2000, supported respectively 19 and 56 projects while the third round (2001) assisted 45 projects.

In the fourth and fifth rounds (2002 and 2003), 66 and 44 projects respectively received funds from Mfuko. In 2003, the Fine Arts and Crafts constituency received the highest support for 26 projects whereas the Audiovisual constituency received the lowest support for 2 projects. This was respectively equivalent to 59% and 5% of the total projects supported in that year.

The sixth round of grants (2004) had the highest number of projects ever supported by Mfuko in one year. A total of 72 grantees received funds for their projects, which is equivalent to 23.8% of all grantees who have received support from Mfuko since its establishment.

Up to the present, the Fine Arts & Crafts constituency has received the highest support for 106 projects 106, while the Cultural Industry sub-sector has received the lowest support for 13 projects.

Highlights on Grants for Year 2004 (Sixth round)
In the 2004 round, a total of 513 applications including 30 from non-cultural applicants were submitted to Mfuko's Secretariat of which only 72 were successful. Again, the Fine Arts & Crafts sub-sector submitted the highest number of applicants, 214, while the Cultural Industry constituency submitted only 8.

More that Tshs. 400 milion will be disbursed to grantees in this round. A total of 50 projects or equivalent to 69% of the total projects to be funded in 2004 are aimed at capacity building for various cultural and associated activities. In this round, the Fine Arts & Crafts constituency has 100% of its projects dedicated to capacity building.

In capacity building, emphasis is being put on training, skills enhancement and improvement of product quality. Also stress is being put on research, information and skills exchange workshops and seminars as well as the purchase of working tools and raw materials for the supported projects.

Projected Grants for year 2005 (Seventh round)
Activities for this round started in May 2004 when the Grants Committee of the Board of Trustee reviewed the application forms. The reviewed forms were then made available to applicants from June 2004 after notice inviting aspiring grantees appeared in the local media.

Forms are available at Mfuko's Secretariat FREE OF CHARGE or can be downloaded from our website (see the grants page). Up to the present, many aspirants have sought forms from Mfuko and this shall continue until August 31, 2004, which will be the deadline for submission of applications.

More information on 2005 round of grants will be available soon after the deadline for submission of projects proposals and their forms. This information will appear in the new News & Events page in this website.
