Performing Arts
Profile
This sub-sector comprises of individual artists, groups and associations engaged in performing arts in its broadest sense. These include actors, actresses, directors, producers, stage managers and composers in fields such as drama, traditional folk music and traditional dance. Other areas are acrobatics and contemporary theatrical activities. For a long period dating back to the centralised socio-economic era, many such associations/organisations remained weak as most of them relied on support from the government or its ministries/departments. Since the early 1990s, actors and stakeholders in this constituency have shown strong sign of renewed strength by attempting to put up improved productions, exhibition and forming associations that bring their efforts and common activities together. Since 1999 Mfuko has promoted this constituency by funding projects of individuals or organisations, which covered training and skills exchange, production and exhibition and enforcement of intellectually property tights. Also emphasis was placed on the use of technologies and mass media for promotion of the above activities and their actors. The beneficiaries of this constituency include colleges and training institutions, cultural groups and performing arts associations, non-governmental organisations, the civil society as well as individual artists. The focal point of this sub-sector is the Bagamoyo College of Arts.
